What's new
What is new in Hreinskrift.
Altalandi is now Hreinskrift
The same service, account and credit under a new name at hreinskrift.is. Old links lead here, and API keys and connections keep working.
Short Icelandic words are read as Icelandic
A single Icelandic word without Icelandic letters, such as „merkingarlag“, could be read as English. Hreinskrift now checks short texts against BÍN and an English dictionary, so they are read in the right language.
More examples of how Hreinskrift works
How it works now shows real examples by situation: an email, a translation from English, proofreading and AI-written text. More
One word, more options
Type one to three English words and you now also get the other Icelandic words that fit, each with a short note on when to use it. "Referral" can be „tilvísun“, „meðmæli“ or „ábending“.
Proofreading fixes words that should agree
When two words that should be inflected alike are not, for example „frá þessum birgja“, proofreading suggests the right form: „frá þessum birgjum“. It only does so when the context shows which form is right.
Changes say where the words come from
When Hreinskrift uses a word from the Orðakista, the reason says so, for example "team player" → „hæfni til að vinna í teymi“: the wording Icelandic job ads use.
Eight new fields in the Orðakista
The Orðakista now has the words Icelanders actually use in knitting and crochet, job ads, online shops, property listings, recipes, role-playing games, video games and fitness. „k2tog“ is „2 sl saman“ and "team player" is „hæfni til að vinna í teymi“. Translations of job ads and recipes already use them. More
We learn without personal data
Hreinskrift learns from the texts people send, but first people's names and street addresses are taken out, as well as ID numbers, email addresses and numbers. We recognise names in every inflection. This applies to texts already kept, too. More
More corrections come through
If Hreinskrift is unsure about one sentence, that sentence stays as you wrote it and the rest are fixed. Before, the whole text came back unchanged.
Personal data is removed first
ID numbers (kennitölur), email addresses, phone, card and account numbers are replaced with placeholders before the text reaches the language model, and put back in the result. The services that process the text may neither keep it nor train on it. More
A bigger Orðakista
Interface words from public institutions, universities and museums are in, and the Icelandic of Statistics Iceland's database. Over 6,000 words and phrases from software and websites are now in the collection. More
Every change explained
When a word's inflection changes, the reason says exactly what changed, for example accusative instead of nominative, or the subjunctive instead of the indicative.
Icelandic dashes
The long English dash never appears in text from Hreinskrift. The Icelandic dash is used instead: short, with a space on each side.
Idioms
The Orðakista knows Icelandic idioms for English ones, for example “not my first rodeo” → „ekki mínar fyrstu réttir“. More
The Orðakista
The Icelandic words that software and websites actually use, such as „Vista“ and „Skrá út“, and the names of countries, languages and places in Iceland with their inflections. Look them up on the site or let your AI use the collection. More
You decide how AI apps use Hreinskrift
In Settings, choose Ask first, Automatic or Always: whether apps like Claude ask you before sending text to Hreinskrift. More
Job history
Every job gets its own page: what was sent, what came back and how the checks went. There you can approve the result or correct it.
Hreinskrift in English
The site is in English too, for anyone who needs to turn English text into natural Icelandic. More
Proofreading
Hreinskrift proofreads Icelandic text: clear errors are fixed and other corrections are offered as suggestions you accept or reject. More
