Icelandic translation services
Native Icelandic for brands entering Iceland
Icelanders read English, but they buy in Icelandic. Hreinskrift turns your English copy into natural Icelandic, checks that it says exactly what you said, and shows you every change.
Why your Icelandic has to sound Icelandic
Icelandic law says that advertisements aimed at Icelandic consumers shall be in Icelandic (Act No. 57/2005). And Icelanders notice a translation at once. Translation tools and AI models learn far less Icelandic than English, so they put Icelandic words into English sentences. Every word is right, yet the text reads foreign, and foreign copy costs trust.
What you get
- Copy written in Icelandic, not word for word: the register, rhythm and idioms a local would use.
- The meaning checked. The Icelandic is translated back and compared with your English, and prices, numbers, dates and names are checked one by one.
- No claims you didn't make. If the writer adds a quality or a promise your English does not contain, it is taken out.
- Every change shown, with the reason for it.
- Seconds, not days. A paragraph usually takes under half a minute, checks included.
Examples
| Your English | Hreinskrift |
|---|---|
| Don't miss out on our biggest sale of the year. Shop now and save up to 40% on everything you love. | Láttu stærstu útsölu ársins ekki fram hjá þér fara. Verslaðu núna og fáðu allt að 40% afslátt af öllum þínum uppáhaldsvörum. |
| Book your table today and enjoy a taste of the season. Fresh local ingredients, cooked with care. | Pantaðu borð í dag og njóttu bragðs árstíðarinnar. Ferskt hráefni úr héraði, matreitt af alúð. |
In the second example the writer first added “delicious dishes” and “the freshest”. Your English said neither, so the check took them out.

Questions
- Is this human translation?
- No. An AI writer produces the Icelandic, and automated checks make sure it says what your English says: the text is translated back and compared, and numbers, prices, dates and names are checked one by one. For documents that need a certified translator, such as court papers, use a certified translator.
- Do I need to read Icelandic?
- No. The meaning check compares the Icelandic with your English for you, and every change is listed. For a large campaign it is still worth having a native speaker read the final copy once.
- What does it cost?
- Every account gets 6,500 characters a day (about 1 article). Beyond that you pay from prepaid credit: about 32 ISK an A4 page, or about 80 ISK with the Max writer for formal and legal text. No subscription needed. Prices include Icelandic VAT.
- Is my text kept?
- Text you pay for goes into our text bank only if you agree. Text in the free allowance is kept there with personal details removed, to improve the service, unless you opt out in your account. Text sent through the ChatGPT and Claude connectors never goes into the bank. Separately, an account's texts and results are kept in its run history until you delete them, and only you and your team can open them.
- Can you handle a whole website or app?
- Yes. A single command translates a folder of Markdown, HTML or JSON files, or a website, and keeps code, links, placeholders and tags exactly as they were. There is also an API for your own tools.
