Hreinskrift terms

The service

Hreinskrift rewrites English or stiff Icelandic text into natural Icelandic and automatically compares the meaning with the source text. The result is produced with language models and may contain errors. You are responsible for reviewing text before it is published, especially legal, financial or medical text. Changes are shown and the meaning is checked, but that does not replace proofreading.

What you pay for

The fee for use covers two things:

• Hreinskrift's own service: the processing pipeline that Hreinskrift has developed and runs (how the text is sent for processing, the meaning comparison, the language assessment, the lists of changes and the safeguards against wrong changes), the web tool, the API, the command-line tool and the connections to other apps, together with hosting, operation and user support.
• The cost of external language model providers that the text is sent to during processing, directly or through intermediaries such as OpenRouter. These providers are not part of Hreinskrift, and their own terms govern their processing.

You do not pay for open-source software or open data. Hreinskrift uses open-source software and open data from third parties free of charge under their licences (see the next section). They are neither sold nor rented, and the fee is not for them. Anyone can use them themselves under the same licences.

Open-source software and data

Hreinskrift is built on, among other things, the following open-source software and data. Their rights holders are not parties to the service, bear no responsibility for it, and have neither approved nor endorsed it. The names are used to credit the source, not as Hreinskrift trademarks.

• GreynirCorrect, Greynir (reynir), Tokenizer, Icegrams and islenska from Miðeind ehf. Licence: MIT. Copyright © Miðeind ehf.
• The Database of Icelandic Morphology (Beygingarlýsing íslensks nútímamáls, BÍN). The Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies. Author and editor Kristín Bjarnadóttir. Licence: CC BY-SA 4.0, bin.arnastofnun.is. The data is looked up unchanged to check word forms, and the case forms of place names in the Orðakista come from it.
• IceBERT from Miðeind ehf. Licence: CC BY 4.0. The model is used unchanged to assess text.
• The Hnappasafn draws, among other sources, on the Icelandic translations of interface strings in open-source software: Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird (licence: MPL 2.0), LibreOffice (MPL 2.0, Copyright © The Document Foundation), the Android Open Source Project (Apache 2.0), Chromium (BSD-3-Clause, Copyright © The Chromium Authors) and Ísland.is (MIT, Copyright © Digital Iceland). Each translation keeps a reference to the file it came from.
• The Orðakista draws, among other sources, on Unicode CLDR (names of countries, languages, currencies and units; Unicode licence, Copyright © Unicode, Inc.), Wikidata (CC0) and Statistics Iceland (municipalities and towns; CC BY 4.0).

Terminology collections and language usage advice: Íðorðabankinn and Málfarsbankinn, the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies. The rights to the term collections belong to the terminology committees that compile them.

Questions about licences and rights holders can be sent to hallo@hreinskrift.is.

Texts and the text bank

You keep all rights to the text you send and to the result. When you use the service free of charge, on the front page or within the free daily allowance, you give Hreinskrift a perpetual, royalty-free licence to keep the text and the result, with personal data removed, and to use them to improve the service, including to train and test models. The licence does not cover text that you keep out of the text bank, nor text paid for from credit unless you specifically allow it. See the privacy policy for details.

Separately from the text bank, the text and the result are kept in your account's run history until you delete them, so that you and your team can open them. Keeping them there gives Hreinskrift no right to use the text. See the privacy policy for details.

Do not send text that you do not have the right to have processed. Also, do not send sensitive personal data in free use.

Accounts and keys

You are responsible for your account and your API keys. Do not share them with others, and revoke a key in your account if you suspect it has leaked. You may not use the service to break the law, send spam or try to get around usage limits; accounts that do so may be closed. You may also not systematically copy the service's word and text collections, such as the Hnappasafn, or its other data, for example by collecting answers in bulk to build your own database or a competing service.

Credit and prices

• Every account gets a free daily allowance, and a new account receives trial credit once, when the email address has been confirmed. Beyond that, each call is paid for from prepaid credit.
• Prices are in Icelandic krónur, including VAT. The price of each call is set by the price list in force when the call runs, and price changes do not affect the value of credit you already have. Credit does not expire.
• You pay by card on Kling's payment page (kling.is), and the credit is added to your account as soon as the payment is confirmed. Card numbers never reach us.
• When you buy credit and use it, you ask for the service to be provided straight away.
• Automatic top-up is optional. You choose the amount, the threshold and a monthly maximum.

Cancellation

• An account comes with no subscription and no commitment, and you can stop using the service at any time.
• You can cancel automatic top-up at any time in your account. It stops immediately. No further charges are made.
• A company subscription renews automatically every month until it is cancelled in your account. After cancellation, the subscription runs to the end of the period already paid for, and credit the subscription has added does not expire.
• You can ask for your account to be closed by emailing us at hallo@hreinskrift.is. We close it within five working days and delete personal data in line with the privacy policy, except to the extent that the law requires us to keep accounting records.
• If a user breaches these terms, we may close their account. Unused purchased credit is then refunded.

Refunds and the right to withdraw

• Under the Consumer Contracts Act No. 16/2016, a consumer may withdraw from a purchase of credit within 14 days of the date of purchase without giving a reason. Notice of withdrawal must be sent to hallo@hreinskrift.is.
• We refund the unused part of purchased credit. The part already used counts as a service provided at your request and is not refunded.
• In addition to the statutory right to withdraw, we refund unused purchased credit at any time if you close your account.
• Trial credit, volume bonuses and credit from codes are not refunded. A volume bonus is cancelled when the top-up it came with is refunded.
• Refunds are made to the same card that was used to pay, no later than 14 days after the request is received.
• If you were charged in error, we correct it and refund you in full.

Availability and changes

We aim to keep the service running, but we do not guarantee that it is always available or free of errors. These terms and the service may change, but significant changes will be announced here and in your account. The privacy policy governs personal data.

Law and disputes

These terms are governed by Icelandic law. If no agreement is reached, a consumer can turn to the Consumer Complaints Board (kærunefnd vöru- og þjónustukaupa). Disputes may be brought before the Reykjavík District Court.
